Research / case studies of real magazines

Front Cover Analysis:
- The genre of this magazine is hip hop as Kendrick Lamar is the front cover of this NME magazine and he represents the hip hop music industry

- Masthead: Part of the masthead is covered with Kendrick Lamar's head this meaning that they have a good brand image as they can cover their logo and still be identified because the are global and have a strong brand image.

- The image is a mid shot of the cover star Kendrick Lamar he is Hip hop Artist.
He is wearing black in the magazine this makes Kendrick's statement stand out because of the contrast.
The Pose of the cover star which is Kendrick Lamar is smiling this portrays that he is happy and wants to be appealing to the majority of the people reading the magazine and this makes him look like a good character which may mean more people buy the magazine.

-House style has a 3 colour scene which is green white and red these colours are all bright which go with the cover star's pose as he the brightness expresses his mood.
There is a barcode and the price on the bottom left of the magazine.

- The font of the magazine is simple which makes it have a formal look and makes it appealing to any target audience.
The font is big 'Kendrick Lamar' this makes it clear it is about him
The Pull quote "I want to be talked about in the same way as Dylan, The Beatles, Hendrix ..."
this is a very positive way to start off a magazine and the ellipses makes the reader want to know more.

Contents Page Analysis:
- The House Style of the content page is a 3 colour scheme which is white, black and red.

- The font style is modern kind of font this suits our current century.
All the subtitles have a box round it this may represent that they are the top stories or top interview as it makes it stand out because only the subtitles and the logo have a box round them.

- There is a date at the bottom of the content page and this indicates when the magazine was published  .

- There are page numbers and this makes what you want to read much more easier to access as you will know where to go straight away.

- Tame Impala is the person in the image and this is the only picture in the content page this could suggest that it is the most publicly spoken and that's why he only has a image.
NME make it clear of what story or upcoming event is important or the most interesting.
NME have made their content page instinctive as instead of the title being 'Content' it says 'inside me.

Double Page Spread Analysis:

- In this house style there is only a 2 colour scheme which is black and white as there is many other colours that hasn't got a scheme to it just a different verity of colours.

- The layout of this magazine looks professional but has a informal touch to it due to the many colours in the pages as it does not follow no schemes.

- NME have made a formal layout but a informal house style this makes the double page spread look balanced in that form.

-NME are advertising the artist that are a part of the list as they are all songs and the reader that is reading the magazine may be interested and go listen to the artist's music.

-There are many different music genres in this double spread page.

- I think that NME have tried to make this magazine appealing to everyone as it is not too formal for a young person to read and it is not too informal for someone older so they have balanced it out and how they have done this in my opinion is from their choice of font and the variety of colour used.

  1. Jesse you have done some analysis of contents and cover, although you don't seem to entirely understand why decisions have been made. NME genre and target audience - you need to research these through the media kit and website to understand better, it has recently changed but has never been a hip hop magazine. Also your DPS choice doesn't include an interview or full article which would be more useful to analyse. Remember you are not just describing but explaining images (camera, mise-en-scene and why) and text, journalistic style etc.
