Research / case studies of real magazines

Front Cover Analysis:
-The genre is Rap/Hip Hop because the cover starts are involved in that industry.

- The Masthead is has two different colours which is black and white.
This is not a usual masthead because of that also the font is artistic which could suggest the audience is to old from 16 and over .

- The Image is a close shot of two big music industry  members which are Dr. Dre & Ice Cube there clothing fits the colour scheme which is black, grey & white, both of their tops are black which makes it stand out from the background .
Also the cover stars both have a serious face, which makes them look cool & the lightening has a effect as one side of their face is dark which makes their face look intimidating.

-House Style has a 3 colour scheme which is black grey and white throughout front cover which is simple.

- Something unusual on this magazine is that it does not have a barcode.

- Question 'Is Apple Taking Over the Music Business?'  this is a intriguing question as there is a link as Dr. Dre  recently sold beats his own business to Apple.

Content Analysis:
-The 3 colour scheme is white, black & red.

-There are 3 picture which represent the people themselves also.

-As you can see there are 3 picture but one is bigger than the rest, this portrays that it is the most interesting to read about or is the most spoken about which is David Gilmour new album & new tour.

-All of the picture which are the top stories have a number at the bottom right.

-Font of this content page is modern and goes with the 21stcentury and for every subtitle it is embolden to make it clear to the audience that it is a new title and it is talking about something different. The picture of Gilmour is a close shot of him smiling which makes him look happy because of his release of his album and tour, this shows that he is a positive character.

- The image, bottom right picture looks serious and give us a insight that on that page it will be a article.

- At the bottom of he page there is a date of when the content page was made this indicates how old the magazine is.

- Also there is a website which can link reader to more
Rollingstone magazines that has come out or will be coming out so this is metaphorically advertising.

- The content page is very useful as it makes customers find what they want o read at easily as it provides page number as they are easily accessible.

Double Page Spread Analysis:
-The 3 colour scheme is white, black and grey these 3 colours are casual.
This could be because the article is based on NWA which was a music group In the 90's so it is the past and the Rollingstone has made it the article looking old-fashioned and not modernised.

-At the start of the article there is a drop cap and through out there is another 2 this may be because of a change of subject about the group and straight away the reader will realise this.
The Drop Caps are big and bold corresponding to the strong statement which is a pull quote in the middle of the page 'We were in the middle of gangs, police brutality, Reaganomics, and there was nowhere to escape' says Ice cube.
That statement will straight a interest the reader because of how serious it is, this may be why it is positioned in the middle of the page.

-The image is of their group in the picture their is a trend of black and white also thee image is a middle shot as the picture is half of them.
None of them were smiling in their poses, this makes them look unhappy also matches with ice cubes statement on the first page of the double page spread which reflects their frustration.
If you look in the first paragraph the font is different from the rest of the writing this may be because that it  is important information.

This Article is about NWA which was a hip hop, rap & RnB  group it also explains what went on in the group and it gives the reader a insight on the film that was coming out 'Straight Outta Compton' and it promotes the film.

  1. Rolling Stone analysis also has some useful analysis of the conventions, but needs detail - read the article and discuss images with more detail so camera shots, mise-en-scene elements and why chosen. This should link to genre and target audience which you need to research. Cover lines and text analysis could use work too.
